What can Terrafirma Dyip expect from PBA Season 50 No. 1 draft pick Geo Chiu?
Terrafirma Dyip selected Geo Chiu as the first overall pick in the 2025 PBA draft, viewing him as a long-term project rather than an immediate star. Despite a large pool of 122 applicants, the team took a gamble on Chiu's potential, acknowledging his mix of promising upside and current need for refinement.
Chiu, a 6-foot-10 former Ateneo Blue Eagle, stands out for his size and improved agility, making him one of the tallest and most mobile big men in the PBA. His development was aided by stints with the Taiwan Mustangs and Japan's Ehime Orange Vikings, where he enhanced his floor-running and activity near the basket. Currently playing for the Abra Weavers in the MPBL, he shows progress in transition offense and positioning for easy scoring opportunities.
However, Chiu's performance remains inconsistent. Through ten games with Abra, he averaged only 6.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game, with a concerning 48.6% field goal percentage despite taking most shots near the rim. His struggles primarily stem from poor touch, rushed attempts, and difficulty establishing deep post position, leading to inefficient finishes against smaller defenders.
