Knicks working out Dennis Smith Jr. as guard eyes NBA comeback

The New York Knicks are hosting a workout for former point guard Dennis Smith Jr., who is seeking an NBA comeback. Smith, 27, last played for Real Madrid in Spain but left early due to injury, effectively taking a year off from competitive basketball.

In addition to Smith, the Knicks are also evaluating free agent frontcourt players such as Alex Len and Trey Jemison III. The team currently has only 12 players on guaranteed contracts but can bring up to 21 players to training camp.

Due to salary cap constraints, the Knicks can only keep one more veteran player for the regular season. However, they have at least three players with extensive NBA experience on nonguaranteed deals—Malcolm Brogdon, Landry Shamet, and Garrison Mathews. As a result, league observers anticipate the Knicks will make a trade to free up roster space and retain two of these players.

Dennis Smith Jr. aims to be part of the competition for a spot on the team.
