Romano: Bundesliga giants tried to hijack Milan’s Nkunku deal – the background

25/09 10:04

AC Milan secured the signing of Christopher Nkunku late in the transfer window, with Bayer Leverkusen also reportedly attempting to acquire the player. The operation progressed rapidly, with major sources indicating that Milan and Chelsea agreed on a deal worth €37 million plus €5 million in bonuses. This move marked a shift in Milan's strategy, as they had been pursuing more natural strikers throughout the summer.

The deal was first reported on August 27th by journalists Matteo Moretto and Fabrizio Romano and was finalized on August 28th when Nkunku arrived in Milan. However, on the same day, Bayer Leverkusen made a last-minute attempt to sign the French forward by matching Milan's offer. Nkunku explicitly rejected this, stating his desire to join only Milan and not return to the Bundesliga.

After weeks of training at Milanello to regain match fitness, Nkunku made his first start for Milan in a Coppa Italia match against Lecce. He played over 60 minutes, scored an acrobatic goal, hit the post, and drew a red card, marking a strong debut performance for the club.
